About

OUR ROOTS

Here at Refugees Matter Society, we are committed to a single goal;

we strive to make the world a better place.

We are a BC-registered Canadian non-profit society dedicated to empowering refugees and dispaced populations living in refugee-like situations.

Currently, our major focus is on developing programs in Sakarya, Turkey that empower female refugees through economic advancement. Our goal is to provide skills training, community support, business mentorship, and micro-grants to groups of women who want to start their own businesses. Our 2018 project in Turkey will reach 100-120 female refugees and their families. Our goal is to help these businesses employ up to 10 staff each.

Our other activities include:

1. Digital English training and professional upgrading programs that help skilled refugees qualify for economic immigration to Canada and other like-minded countries.

2. Advocacy to ensure helping refugees remains a top Canadian priority.

3. Providing resources and support to like-minded Canadian refugee organizations.

All of our Canadian programs are 100% volunteer-run.

Our organization is not pursuing any private refugee sponsorships for 2017-2018.

OUR WORK

EMPOWERING FEMALE REFUGEES IN SAKARYA, TURKEY

LEADERSHIP PROGRAMS, BUSINESS TRAINING, AND MICRO-GRANT FUNDING

Refugees Matter Society is currently in the process of developing a one-year business incubator program for female refugees in Turkey. For the first 3 months, the women will be enrolled in a community empowerment and business skills training program where they develop their own community support pods, engage in conflict resolution, host community workshops, and learn the basics of running a business.

Graduates of the three-month program will qualify for a nine-month business startup program where they develop business plans, obtain micro-grant funding, and launch their businesses with the support of our NGO and business networks across Turkey.

ECONOMIC IMMIGRATION: PROFESSIONAL UPGRADING AND ENGLISH LANGUAGE TRAINING

PROGRAMS FOR REFUGEES IN WAITING

We provide English language programs for refugees overseas, and also assist sponsorship groups interested in setting up their own digital English classrooms and online peer-to-peer English language practice.

We also connect refugees to Canadian professional accrediting bodies relevant to their professions and refer them to resources that can help them qualify for skilled work in Canada.

COMMUNITY & POLITICAL ADVOCACY

RAISING AWARENESS FOR SYRIAN AND IRAQI REFUGEES

Since 2015, we have actively engaged officials in all levels of government, the public, and the media, through public advocacy, research reports, national tours, private meetings, press releases, and municipal rallies. We continue to remain a voice advocating for the needs of Syrian and Iraqi refugees.

"Refugees Matter Society" is a social organization. It is not an immigration law firm or consultancy.

Refugees face immigration challenges that don't apply to normal economic immigrants. If you're not living as a refugee or displaced person, please contact a reputable Canadian immigration consultant or lawyer for immigration advice.
